Manitoulin Island

Surrounded by Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island well deserves its prized designation as the World's Largest Freshwater Island. Home to 108 lakes, including Lake Manitou (the world's largest lake within a freshwater island), water abounds on Manitoulin.

Of course this means Manitoulin is the perfect location for water based activities. A popular destination for boaters, fishermen try their luck for salmon and trout in the warm inland lakes and in the bigger waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Bordered on the north by the infamous North Channel, Manitoulin is a world renowned sailing destination. Sailors travel from the world around to explore the majestic bays and inlets of this sailing paradise.

Steeped in a rich native culture, Manitoulin showcases several powwows throughout the summer and early fall. Artists thrive on Manitoulin’s rugged beauty and pastoral places. Many have come to call it home and now offer their creations at studios and galleries in the island’s quaint shops and villages.

Those looking for a more active vacation will find walking and hiking trails leading to such famous locations as Bridal Veil Falls and the Cup & Saucer Bluff, both a product of the Niagara Escarpment and its rugged rock formations. Providence Bay and its white sandy beach offer the perfect place to kick back and relax.

Manitoulin Island is linked year round to the main-land of Ontario by a swing bridge in the village of Little Current. May to October, the ChiCheemaun, a passenger-vehicle ferry delivers visitors to South Baymouth from Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula.

Communities: Espanola, Gore Bay, Little Current, Meldrum Bay, Providence Bay, South Baymouth
