More than 32 lighthouses dot the Georgian Bay Coastal Route’s 2,000 kilometres of shoreline. Many are easily accessible and some are even open to the public for a sneak peek. With histories dating back over 150 years, these guiding lights are set to act as a beacon for marine heritage lovers. Bruce Coast Lighthouses an Increasingly Rare Commodity
Winding and twisting over 800km of rocky, hazardous shoreline through Lake Huron, the Bruce Coast has had a love-hate relationship with mariners for centuries. Signaling danger, the majestic lighthouses along the shore are some of the best-preserved structures in all of Canada and still used by boaters today. The Imperial Towers (four of them on the Bruce Coast and six on Georgian Bay) were built by John Brown starting in 1859, using 4-foot thick stone walls, and an imported Fresnel Lenses from France. Open and allowing the public to climb the 112 steps to the top, these magnificent beacons are the rock stars of the Bruce Coast Lighthouse Tour. Recently the Federal Government declared all Lighthouses in Canada as ‘Surplus’ and if not protected as historic sites, or by community groups, the rich heritage of these important structures may be lost. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Killbear Provincial Park has been providing high quality outdoor recreational experiences in a natural environment park since 1960. The sheltered waters of Georgian Bay’s islands are spectacular for kayak explorations. Join the instructors of the White Squall Paddling Centre for an afternoon of adventure and exploration! Wholesome, hearty meals are a highlight after being on the water, and you’ll have lots of time to swim, explore, or simply take in the solitude of the Bay and her islands.
Make your way to Parry Sound’s famous Waterfront and hop onboard a float plane with Georgian Bay Airways, where their friendly pilots will take you on a scenic and panoramic adventure. ATV across the Canadian Shield, fish uninhabited lakes, or even get dropped off on an island of your choice for some exploratory hiking.
Just five minutes up Parry Sound’s main road is the beautiful and historical Bayside Inn. This is an excellent place to rest before undertaking another exciting day in Parry Sound. Awake to the calming bustle of a nearby crossing train and make your way downstairs to enjoy a first class breakfast cooked by the Inn’s critically acclaimed chef before heading back down to the waterfront for a quiet excursion.
Don’t forget to visit the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts and the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. View the spectacular festival performance hall and visit their interactive museum with a variety of photos, memorabilia and artifacts about Parry Sound’s own Bobby Orr and other famous athletes with ties to the community such as Don Cherry, Terry Crisp of the Philadelphia Flyers and Floyd Thomson of the St. Louis Blues. At the West Parry Sound District Museum you can take a brisk walk along their gorgeous park on Tower Hill, ending with a climb to the 96-foot observation tower overlooking beautiful Parry Sound, Georgian Bay and the 30,000 Islands. Be sure to tour the museum before moving on, which features a changing calendar of exhibits themed around trapping, First Nations, shipping, logging, agriculture and contagion in three galleries. Massasauga Provincial Park
Situated along Georgian Bay's eastern shore, south of Parry Sound, this park is unique as a water-access only park. The park's 135 campsites are accessible only by water and are located either amongst the 30,000 islands of Georgian Bay or on the many inland lakes that are reserved for non-motorized travel. 9 Days Getting To Know a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve – Hiking the Bruce Trail From Wiarton to Tobermory
Designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1990, the Niagara Escarpment is an internationally recognized landform that forms a massive ridge through Southern Ontario right up to and across Manitoulin Island. By far the most dramatic section follows the Georgian Bay shoreline from Wiarton to Tobermory. Luckily, the Bruce Trail follows this spine creating the perfect venue to understand why this massive chunk of rock is so significant. A 9-12 day backpacking hike along the trail is on the bucket list for a lot of outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers will be tested by challenging terrain and rewarded with some of the best views in all of Canada. For those that appreciate the creature comforts, a bed and breakfast network called ‘Home to Home’ offers hikers a daily pick up, warm bed, and drop off the next morning. Hikers might encounter globally significant wildlife such as the endangered Massasauga Rattle Snake, a vibrant spring and fall bird migration, and the elusive black bear. Cosmos: The Dark Side - Cosmos: the Dark Side is a new object theatre produced by Science North that explores our understanding of the universe. From Galileo's inspired observations of Jupiter 400 years ago, to today's extraordinary telescopes, observatories, and space probes, every new discovery has shown us the universe is more astonishing than we could imagine. Strange Matter - Discover the secrets of everyday stuff with the new exhibition Strange Matter! From metals to crystals to magnets to glass, this hands-on exhibition will allow you to use science to explore the bizarre world of modern materials! The exhibit captures advanced materials used in high-tech fields such as the space program and cardiac surgery and reveals them in more common places, like the shoes that you wear, the dishes you eat off of to the CD's you listen to and the bike or skateboard you ride.
Digital Dome Planetarium - Science North's digital dome Planetarium is the first planetarium of its kind in Northern Ontario! Feature films about astronomy and other space topics are projected on an 8.4 metre dome. Tour outer space like never before and witness beautiful celestial images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope which can only be seen from points far distant in space and time.

Manitoulin Island - Where Spirits Come to Play
Manitoulin Island is the world’s largest freshwater island and home to the Anishnaabe people who have long since believed Manitoulin is “Home of the Great Spirit-Gitchi-Manitou.” Discover a rich aboriginal heritage, unique shops and museums, colourful festivals and friendly island hospitality.
The eight First Nation communities of The Great Spirit Circle Trail offer visitors a wide array of regularly scheduled aboriginal events, tours and excursions ranging from nature-based adventure to educational interpretive. If a little exercise is what you seek, join the spirits and challenge yourself at The Cup and Saucer Hiking Trail. This easily accessible trail has a unique outline against the Manitoulin skyline. Signs mark the trail through the woods up the dramatic edge of the escarpment to a grassy resting-place. Trails from 2 km to 5.4 km in length offer everything from a gentle walk to an adventure trail that will take the avid hiker up and down sturdy ladders, up a natural rock chimney and along narrow ledges on the top of the escarpment for a panoramic view of the North Channel of Lake Huron.
During your visit on the island, enjoy an afternoon picnic at Bridal Veil Falls. View the falls from a picnic area that features huge millstones once used in the Kagawong gristmill or take the steps down to the river below where visitors can walk under the falls, take a cool dip, or follow one of several trails along the winding river to the North Channel.
Are you travelling by car or by boat? Why not both! Known in native Ojibwe as the “Big Canoe” the MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry majestically carves it’s way through the scenic waters of Georgian Bay connecting Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula with South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. The ferry can transport 638 passengers and 143 cars and is roughly a 1 hour and 45 minute crossing.

Rare Orchids and Ancient Cedars
The Bruce Peninsula is home to over 40 species of orchids. Some are globally rare and extremely significant. Little treasures such as the Calypso Orchid, about the size of a dime draw botanists from all over the world to photograph and record its sighting. The conditions are surprisingly harsh on the Peninsula for these delicate plants consisting of a very shallow soil on top of the dolostone of the Niagara Escarpment. This same topography is home to the ancient white cedars, the oldest trees in Eastern North America reaching over 1000 years old. Gnarled and sheltered from the fires that have swept over the Bruce Peninsula, these trees cling to the cliff face, defying gravity and all botanical logic. If you are in search of a comfortable camping experience that can be enjoyed year-round, head to Killarney Provincial Park for an unforgettable stay in a yurt! A Yurt is a Mongolian style semi-permanent tent traditionally used in Central Asia by Nomads. A Killarney Yurt is a modern aluminum-framed, eight-sided, insulated tent 16 feet in diameter and constructed on a large wooden deck. Each Yurt is remotely located at the end of a trail off of the main interior parking lot, is furnished with a dining table, six chairs and two futon bunk beds. Yurts are equipped with lights, electric heat, two GFIC outlets, and four windows for your comfort. Outside on your private deck, you’ll find a BBQ with a shelter, a picnic table, a second picnic table, a fire ring, and a metal bear-proof food box with a cooking surface.

The French River is an ancient river system surrounded by dramatic landscape sculpted by ice age glaciers. These glaciers left behind cliffs, ridges, shoals and thousands of islands, which gives the vast water system its unique topography.

Rene, former mayor of French River, has brought the history of the French River to life by retracing parts of the river’s historic fur trading route and sharing stories of the river’s past. Once the cruise has reached the main channel, it is like taking a step back in time! This section of the French River has remained virtually unchanged as it is surrounded by Crown and Native land. Rene’s Cruises runs 2 to 5-hour cruises from May until mid-October and will accommodate requests to stop for relaxation, swimming, photography, picnicking or painting.

Travel half way around the world to find the world’s best sailing? Not a chance. A Georgian Bay sailor recently told stories of a sailing trip on the Mediterranean. The locals told him the best sailing in the world could be found on the North Channel in Ontario, Canada – from whence he originated. He had to agree. The North Channel, with its pristine waters, quartzite cliffs, windswept pines and smooth rocky shores, boasts the best freshwater sailing in the world.

Parry Sound Snowmobile District
PSSD/OFSC District 10 is located in the district of Parry Sound/Muskoka. The heart of Georgian Bay Country, our trails can be accessed within a short drive from the GTA. Member clubs operate a trail network of over1,100 kilometers containing both a mix of looping or family trails along with several Trans Ontario Provincial (TOP) Trails. Trails in the Parry Sound Snowmobile District span from the Moon River in the South to the Key River in the North and from Georgian Bay in the East to Hwy 11 in the West. The pride and heartbeat of our volunteers which is evident in the trails, combined with the awesome scenery, and the numerous resorts, restaurants and service facilities located directly on the trails come together to ensure a great snowmobile experience.
